Tokyo Capsule Hotels

Used chiefly by the salarymen who are either too inebriated to drive or walk home, or who’ve missed the last train after burning the midnight oil, Capsule Hotels can offer an affordable alternative for the adventurous traveler.

Capsule Hotels generally start around $35 USD for a night and go up as much as $50.

How much space is in the capsule you ask? Not enough to stand up, but enough to sit with your legs folded. They are relatively comfortable and should not be a problem unless you are claustrophobic. They truly serve their purpose as ‘a place to sleep’ and nothing more than that. The moment you raise your expectations over that you will be disappointed.

Features

Inside your coffin, I mean capsule you’ll find a control panel which will regulate your AC, as well as the built in radio and mini TV. The TV is positioned to face you whilst lying down. There is also an option to put in a few yen for some hard-core Japanese pornography. Fantastic, just what you needed.

For your convenience there will be showers where you can wash up, however they are not private unfortunately.

Speaking of privacy you’ll be relieved to know that yes the glass capsule door does have a shade you can pull over to keep people from seeing you inside.

Internet

Some Capsule Hotels will provide complimentary wifi. Otherwise there may be a small business center where you can get a hard line.

Luggage

Where does your luggage go? If it cannot fit in your capsule with you, it can be placed in a locker.

Pricing

Depending on where you go, you’ll find selections of pricing by time:

2 hours = 1000 yen
Over night = 3000 yen
Breakfast = 600 yen

This can be automated with a vending machine or with a clerk.

Things get even more interesting with vending machines which offer some pretty darn amazing amenities:

Snack – 100 yen
Neck tie – 1200 yen
Undies – 1200 yen
Umbrella – 300 yen
Running shirt – 500 yen
